Football: Jane helps City complete historic treble

Former Rothesay Academy pupil Jane Ross helped Glasgow City complete a historic domestic treble with a 1-0 win over Forfar Farmington in the Henson Scottish Cup final on Sunday.

Danica Dalziel’s first half goal proved enough to give City the season’s final piece of silverware, which will now sit alongside the Premier League Cup and the Scottish Women’s Premier League title in the club’s 2012 trophy cabinet.

Jane might have opened the scoring with only five minutes on the clock at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie, but her shot was well saved by Catherine Fitzsimmons in the Forfar goal - the first of many fine saves by the American-born keeper.

Jane then set up her namesake Leanne Ross for a shot which just edged past the post, before the ex-pupil of Jim Ross’s Rothesay coaching classes met an Emma Mitchell cross with a beautiful strike which came down off the underside of the bar, with the referee ruling the ball did not cross the line.

Fitzsimmons produced the save of the match early in the second half, tipping Jane’s powerful effort over the bar, and the former Academy student sent a good opportunity wide 15 minutes from time, but despite the narrow margin City held on to secure their third domestic trophy of the year in the final match of the season.
