Rothesay Brandane AFC played out a 2 – 2 draw against Weir Recreation AFC away from home on Saturday, October 15.
Both teams picked up their first point of the season in a game the Rothesay team looked set to take all 3 points from, but ultimately lost a goal four minutes from the end.
The Danes again fielded six young players, aged 19 years and under, but still matched a very experienced Weir team in every department.
The Rothesay team went gunning for the Weir defence straight from the first whistle as Sean Lawrence was allowed to run and shoot at goal. The Danes kept up the pressure with some delightful football in midfield with John McBride and Sean Lawrence running the show.
It was Sean who broke the deadlock with a run through the middle and a shot into the bottom corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.
Chances were coming but again the Rothesay team struggled to put them away. As is always likely to happen if you do not take your chances the other team will and that’s what happened.
Weir broke up the field and the number 8 got on the end of a cross and scored to make it 1 – 1 . Right on half-time Sean Lawrence again ran at the Weir defence and was unlucky as he rattled the post with a shot from a tight angle. Half time 1 – 1.
The second half started the same as the first with the Brandanes attacking and playing good football but still unable to take their chances. But again it was Sean Lawrence who managed to break the deadlock with a shot from just outside the 18 yard box which crept into the bottom corner with the goalkeeper looking a bit suspect. The pace the Rothesay boys were playing at was starting to tell and Weirs were now trying hard to get into the game. The Danes’ defence was looking solid and Ryan Leitch in goals was proving hard to beat as he has done in every game so far this season.
From a Brandane free kick deep into Weir’s half the ball hit the Defenders wall and rebounded out to the left winger who ran forward and caught the Danes’ defence out with a great cross and the Centre bundled the ball home with just four minutes to go to make it 2 – 2.
This Saturday Rothesay Brandane play Hamilton at home in the second round of the West of Scotland Cup. Please note there is an early start to this game.
All players please report by 12pm for 1.30pm kick off.
