DAVID DANIELS' battling 36 not out helped guide Bute towards a memorable victory over league leaders Glasgow Accies on a tricky Meadows pitch on Sunday.

Six days of continuous rain had left the pitch in an even poorer condition than the previous week, and Bute captain Mark Crichton chose to bowl first after winning the toss in the hope of making most of the home advantage and the difficult playing su
rface.

And the decision looked to be a good one, with the Accies finding run scoring a difficult task as tight bowling, sharp fielding and a wet pitch combining nicely for Bute.

The best partnership of the Accies' innings was between Dowers and Goyal for the third wicket - the pair put on 37 runs before their double act came to an end with the score on 49 after 21 overs.

The visitors' scoring rate never picked up, wickets fell at regular intervals and after Dowers, the mainstay of the innings, was out for 52, only another eight runs were added in six overs, with the last man out in the 38th over.

The Accies' final tally came to 94, though it was a total which was helped by umpires from their own side, who seemed to be good at stretching their arms but not good at raising their fingers.

Pick of the Bute bowling performances this week were Francois Lintermans, Taff Barnsley and Alan Peacock.

Accies thought they had the game in the bag, with what they considered to be a good bowling and fielding unit to come after the interval - and with Bute reeling at 14 for four in only the ninth over after the resumption of play, it looked as though the Accies' prediction was coming true.

But with Bute riding their luck in the shape of at least half a dozen dropped catches, and being positive in their approach, the excellent partnership between Daniels and David Reid guided the team to within touching distance of the finishing line.

Unfortunately Reid couldn't quite make it to the close after being bowled for 20, but Guy Crichton came in in Reid's place and ensured victory by scoring 17 of the 19 runs Bute required for the win, Daniels batting all the way through for his 36 not out.

This was a tough and gritty performance by the whole Bute team, who will hope to carry on their winning ways against this week's opponents Clydesdale at the Meadows on Sunday.
