VIDEO: ‘Queen of Winter’ sends a shiver round Rothesay

The Queen of Winter - Cailleach Beira - was brought to life in vivid fashion just before Christmas at the first performance of a new puppet play created on Bute.

The show, the work of local writer, actor and puppeteer Alison Clark, told of an old Scottish legend of the Cailleach, the goddess of storms and snow, and her attempts to keep the land in her icy grip - and to thwart her son’s hopes of marrying a maiden who will bring the spring.

Alison has been hard at work for several months creating the rod and shadow puppets who starred in the show - with a little help from her fellow puppet-masters Sheena Ferguson, Alison McIntyre, Silvana Haworth, Rosemary Lonie and Jessica Timms.

The short extract featured here explains the Cailleach’s hopes for her son - and Angus’s hopes for his own life.
