Rothesay areas ‘among Scotland’s most deprived’

The Ballochgoy area of Rothesay is still among Scotland's most deprived despite its major facelift in recent years, according to the Scottish Index on Multiple Deprivation.

The Ballochgoy area of Rothesay is still among Scotland's most deprived despite its major facelift in recent years, according to the Scottish Index on Multiple Deprivation.

Parts of Rothesay town centre have been named among the most deprived areas of Scotland.

According to a report from the Scottish Government’s Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD), Ballochgoy, Columshill Street, Montague Street, Ladeside, King Street and Russell Street have been highlighted for low income and higher levels of crime.

Rothesay was also highlighted as being the most employment-deprived area in Argyll and Bute, and was included in the bottom five per cent of most employment-deprived areas in Scotland.

Local councillor and Argyll and Bute provost Isobel Strong said: “Unemployment has always been higher in Bute than other parts of the area.

“It is a bit depressing that there are not enough local jobs for all the people who want them which leads to many people, particularly those in the younger age groups leaving the island.

“I am hopeful that if the Meikle Kilmory project is successful in obtaining lottery funding then sustainable jobs will be created but we need more projects like that to solve the problem.”
