Island residents gathered on Friday evening to hear arguments both in support of and in opposition to Scotland’s independence from the United Kingdom at The Buteman’s Independence Debate in Rothesay Joint Campus.
Chaired by Rev Ron Rye of Ardbeg Baptist Church, the speakers for ‘Better Together’ were Labour’s Mary Galbraith and former MEP George Lyon, and for ‘Yes Scotland’ economist George Anderson and the SNP’s Mike MacKenzie MSP.
While it was impossible to cover all subjects within the time frame allowed, there was a fairly comprehensive discussion on monetary matters, as well as debate on Scottish and British policies, which followed after children from the island’s primary schools posed their questions to the panel.
For those who were unable to attend the debate in person, we have created a video with clips taken during the course of the evening, which will give you a taster of both the speakers’ and audience’s view on what will undoubtedly be the biggest decision to ever be taken by our country.
A full report of the evening will feature in next week’s Buteman - on sale from Thursday, June 5.
