Six teams participated in this year’s annual raft race on Sunday, August 10 in Rothesay Bay, and as in previous years, came well armed with rotten eggs and flour bombs.
‘Pugwash Buccaneers’, ‘Appalling 11’, ‘Noah’s Ark’, ‘Tartan Ladettes’, the ‘Young Farmers’ and ‘The Co-op’ took to the freezing water at Children’s Corner to compete in the Isle of Bute Sailing Club’s annual raft race, this year in conjunction with Light Up Bute, and while the weather wasn’t as pleasant as last year, competitors weren’t deterred from this fiercely contested event.
This year’s race honoured the David Gaston, who died suddenly on August 10 last year and was a regular supporter of the race as a crew member on the Co-op’s raft. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of David, and a trophy in his name was presented to the best dress raft.
Taking home the first place shield were the ‘Tartan Ladettes’ from Bute Fabrics.
While the crews battled it out on the water, spectators on the shore enjoyed Light Up Bute’s family fun activities on dry land, complete with bouncy castle. Providing music and comment on the race’s progress was DJ Chrissy Kinloch.
