ROTHESAY put on its glad rags and sparkled in the sunshine on Thursday – just in time for the visit to the town by two judges from the Beautiful Scotland competition.

Kate Stevenson and Lorna Mutch were taken on a guided tour of the town which included the much-admired floral displays in the Esplanade gardens, community allotments at Meadows Road and Columshill and volunteer work being undertaken to spruce up Guildford Square.

Throughout the town there was evidence of the support given by local businesses ahead of the visit, with hanging baskets and portable flower beds located outside several of the town’s shops and offices, including The Buteman’s premises in Victoria Street.

The judges’ tour concluded at Ardencraig Gardens, source of those beautiful town centre flower beds, which the judges aptly summed up with a single word: “Wow!”

Both Kate and Lorna visited Rothesay for last year’s Beautiful Scotland awards ceremony – a day when high winds disrupted ferry services and forced many of those at the event to alter their travel plans – but Thursday was very different, with glorious sunshine showing off the town at its best.

This year’s Beautiful Scotland award winners will be announced in September.
