More superfast broadband for Argyll - well, a wee bit of it…

Oban, Taynuilt and Ledaig are the only areas within Argyll and Bute which will, at this stage, benefit from the rollout of superfast broadband later this year.

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, has welcomed the news of the rollout of superfast broadband in Argyll and Bute in a press release issued on Thursday - but closer inspection reveals that only a small number of areas within the region will benefit at this stage.

Oban, Taynuilt and Ledaig, all within the Oban and Lorn area, are the only communities which will be able to receive superfast broadband by this summer as part of the £146m rollout of superfast broadband being led by Highlands & Islands Enterprise and delivered by BT.

Commenting on the announcement Mrs Grant said: “I am pleased that the second tranche of the project is including some of the more rural areas of the Highlands and Islands. Our mail bag has been full of complaints from the Argyll area over the years and I have no doubt of the tremendous benefit the homes and businesses in these areas will gain from this.

“It will be a boost to the economy and to business as well as educationally and socially and I am pleased we are now beginning to see real progress with the project.

Mrs Grant continued: “I look forward to hearing of the next tranche of areas to benefit and hope this will include even more of our more remote and rural areas.”
