Baird of Bute launch new award

The Baird of Bute Society, formed in September of 2010 in honour of Bute blacksmith Andrew Blain Baird who in September 1910 on Bute achieved the “first all-Scottish Heavier-than-air Powered Flight”, has announced the creation of Baird of Bute Society Scottish Aviation Award.

The award will be presented annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to aviation in Scotland and in so doing provides an inspiration to the youth of Scotland.

The inaugural recipient of the 2012 award is Mr. Scott Grier OBE, Chairman of Loganair Limited, Scotland’s airline, which is this year celebrating its semi-centennial 50th year of operation.

When asked about his selection, Mr Grier said: “I am absolutely delighted to be given this award, which commemorates the father of flight in Scotland. I take the award as recognition of Loganair’s success. No other airline has operated for nearly as long under its original name.

“During the lifetime of Loganair, at least 50 Scottish-based airlines and aviation companies have come and gone, but we’re still here and thriving.”

The Award will be presented to Mr Grier on Saturday September 22 at the Baird Airstrip at Kingarth as part of the annual Baird of Bute celebrations.

Dignitaries, and pilots from all over Scotland - most arriving in their own aircraft - will join with the people of the island to watch and enjoy the accompanying festivities.

During the Baird Celebrations in September, the Society will also launch its first publication, a book entitled ‘Andrew Blain Baird – Aviation Pioneer’ with a plan to place a copy in the library of each school in Scotland.

The book has introductions by grandson Andrew Baird III and local MSP Michael Russell, each a member of the Baird of Bute Society.
