£500,000 for Rothesay rebirth

The repair of buildings on Rothesay’s historic waterfront will soon be underway, Scotland’s culture minister has announced.

A sum of £499,933 is being made available to bolster Argyll and Bute Council’s plans for Scotland’s largest conservation area.

The Historic Scotland Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme funding will contribute towards the larger Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

“The view of Rothesay as you approach it on the boat is one that thousands of people are familiar with,” Fiona Hyslop said.

“When the cabinet visited the island during the summer, I heard about the plans for how the repair of these central buildings would be key to breathing new life into the town.

“As well as the funding, this award gives the council and building owners access to expertise and guidance.

“The overall aim is to create opportunities to improve the streetscapes, attract more visitors, develop training in traditional skills and invest in the local economy.”

Councillor Len Scoullar said said it was hoped that by enhancing the gateway to Bute there will be more tourism and economic growth.

He added “Residents in the conservation area regeneration scheme will be able to apply for grants this summer. The money from Historic Scotland will also give residents access to expertise and guidance on the journey to restoring Rothesay to its former glory.”
