Appeal for info on Dam Busters’ link to Bute

The 70th anniversary of the famous ‘Dam Busters’ raids takes place in May this year - and The Buteman would like to hear from anyone with information about the local link to the event.

We know that Loch Striven, just to the north of Rothesay Bay, was used as a testing ground for the ‘Highball’, a smaller version of the famous bouncing bomb created by Barnes Wallis which targeted three German dams on May 16/17, 1943 - but wartime reporting restrictions mean that as far as we know, there were no news articles at the time of the tests.

If you have any info about the Loch Striven tests, or you know of anyone who was involved, please get in touch - you can email us on news@buteman.com or call (01700) 502503.
