Eight new heritage apple trees have been planted in Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay’s community orchard courtesy of funds raised by local firm Coffee Conscience.

The trees were carefully selected by John Hancox from the Commonwealth Orchard and Fruitful Scotland to best suit the island climate, and also add further apple varieties to the existing orchard.

Douglas MacDonald, chairman of the Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay Community Orchards Group, accepted the apple trees from Billy Miller, managing director of Coffee Conscience.

“The orchard will leave a legacy for the community and next generation,” Douglas said, welcoming the donation from funds raised selling Fairtrade coffee produts.

Billy added: “It is always a pleasure to donate apple trees locally. Douglas expressed interest in additional heritage varieties and I was delighted to support the request on behalf of the group.”
