MP Reid hits out at broadband delay

A new contract to deliver next generation broadband services throughout the Highlands and Islands still has not been signed.

The deal between Highlands and Islands Enterprise and BT was meant to have been completed six months ago, but HIE’s strategic engagements manager Claire Ross told Argyll and Bute MP Alan Reid this week that the scale of the project meant that finalising contractual terms had been “difficult and time-consuming”.

Mr Reid said in response: “Delivering broadband throughout the Highlands and Islands is vitally important and it’s disappointing that signing this contract has been delayed yet again.

“It was supposed to have been completed and signed last August, then it was supposed to be before the end of last year, then it was supposed to be early in 2013.

“The UK Government gave Highlands & Islands Enterprise money for broadband infrastructure two and a half years ago. It’s high time they spent it to bring broadband to those communities without it.

“I have asked Highlands & Island Enterprise for an explanation for these repeated delays and called on them to pull out all the stops to get work started as quickly as possible.”
