Bute’s cinema-goers have a choice of three films at the Discovery Theatre in Rothesay over the next week.
First up is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (PG), the sequel to the 2012 hit, which again features an ensemble cast including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle, Tamsin Greig, Tena Desae, Dev Patel, Lillete Dubey, David Strathairn and Richard Gere.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Patel), and it’s making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai).
Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy - posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Gere) and Lavinia (Greig).
This week’s showings also include The Theory of Everything (12A), starring ‘Best Actor’ Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones and telling the life story of the brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde, the arts student he fell in love with whilst studying at Cambridge University in the 1960s.
Over the course of their marriage, as Stephen’s body collapsed under the onset of motor neurone disease and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed that tested the limits of their relationship and dramatically altered the course of both of their lives.
The third choice this week is Wild (15), starring Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Gaby Hoffmann and telling the story of Cheryl Strayed’s rash decision, off the back of her crumbling personal life but with absolutely no experience, to hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail on her own.
