The new chairman of the Bute Highland Games has appealed to the island community to renew its backing for the event, taking place this year on Saturday, August 23.

Gordon Sutherland, who was elected as chairman of the Games committee at its recent AGM, has urged more local businesses to contribute by buying advertising space in the event’s souvenir programme.

The committee is also looking for more volunteers to help sell programmes on the day of the Games and to lend a hand with the physical work required, such as putting up perimeter fences before the event and taking them down again afterwards.

Mr Sutherland said: “There have already been large entries for all the various competitions and we are guaranteed an extremely competitive Games.

“Planning and organising for the Games is a huge task, which is diligently undertaken by a dedicated committee of volunteers.

“It is also extremely expensive to stage the Highland Games, but Bute holds up very well financially, compared to other similar events round the country and thankfully just manages to survive without grant assistance from any public bodies.

“However, to maintain this tradition we must have more advertisers contributing to the programme, and we are urging businesses, both local and further afield, to support the Games by purchasing advertising space in the programme, which will also help to promote their own businesses.”

If you are able to support the Games by placing an advertisement or offering voluntary help, then please contact Gordon by e-mail at or by telephone on 01700 831610.
