Maria Balshaw, a board member of the charity set up to run Rothesay Pavilion after its £8m-plus refurbishment, has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Ms Balshaw, whose husband Nick Merriman chairs the board of the Rothesay Pavilion Charity, was honoured for her services to the arts in Manchester - specifically as director of the Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester City Galleries, a dual role she has held since 2011, though she has been director of the Whitworth since 2006.

She recently oversaw a £15 million refurbishment and extension of the Whitworth, which is part of the University of Manchester and which reopened in February of this year to wide critical and public acclaim after a two-year revamp.

The couple bought a property in Port Bannatyne in 2010 and have been increasingly frequent visitors to the island ever since; they were appointed to the board of the Rothesay Pavilion Charity in early 2014.
