The Burns supper season on Bute began on January 21 in the cosy surroundings of the Straad Hall on the island’s west coast, venue for Ballianlay WRI’s annual celebration of Scotland’s ‘ploughman poet’.
The honour of the Immortal Memory fell for the first time to the Rev Owain Jones, minister of the United Church of Bute, while the ‘top table’ also included renowned local Burns speaker Jim Bicker, Ballianlay WRI president Jennifer Sutcliffe, Dan Edgar, who gave the Toast to the Lassies, Jean Kennedy, who replied for the lassies, and Donald Kinnear, who gave the opening welcome and the Selkirk Grace.
Musical entertainment was provided by young Rothesay piper Daniel McDermott and by Meg Young, accompanied by Jimmy Duncan from the Bute Ceilidh Band.
