Robert McKirdy boosted his chances of retaining the McArthur Cup on Saturday when he increased his lead to six points at the top of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League.
The six-handicapper has an overall total of 311 points from eight counting scores with just four rounds remaining in the stableford tournament. He is now six points clear of second-placed Leighton Thomas who has 305 points, while Graham McArthur is four points further adrift in third place.
Saturday’s round was won by David Bryden (11) on 39 points, a tally boosted by birdies at the ninth and 16th holes. McKirdy, who shared runner-up spot with Peter Martin (26) on 38 points, also had two sub-par scores at the fifth and ninth holes.
Graham McArthur (6), Leighton Thomas (11), and John McBride (12), finished next with scores of 36 points apiece.
As the challenge for the McArthur Cup moves into the final stages of the competition the leading challengers for the title are R. McKirdy 311 points, L. Thomas 305, G. McArthur 301, J. McBride 299, D. Coll and J. Thom both 297, P. McDonald 296, and P. Martin 282.
The tournament, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., continues on Saturday with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.
