Two superb putts by John Kernaghan sealed victory in a closely-fought final of the W. D. McFarlane Memorial Trophy at Kingarth last week.
The 16-handicapper and partner Robert McKirdy took the trophy at the first extra hole when he rolled in a 20-foot putt after their match against Malcolm Calder and Sandy Long had finished all-square.
And it was also Kernaghan who had extended the four-ball better-ball tie on the 18th green where he was on target with a six-footer when victory was within the grasp of their opponents.
* None of the competitors in the third round of the Winter League stableford tournament took full advantage of the almost perfect playing conditions last Saturday.
Four players - Robert McKirdy (5), Graham McArthur (6), Graeme Connor (13), and Richie Smith (17) - topped the returns with scores of 37 points apiece. David Coll (11) was fifth on 36 points, while John McBride (10), Jim Thom (10), and Leighton Thomas (9), were also among the leading scorers, all with totals of 35 points.
The competition, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., continues on Saturday with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.
