Golf: Jim and Liam are Port’s league champions

JIM MULDOON and Liam Shanks are the new Rothesay Motor Services Winter League champions at Port Bannatyne after a tense final against holders Graham Fisher and Ian McFarlane.

In stark contrast to many of the wet and wintry Sundays which have featured in this season’s competition, the bright spring sunshine of Friday, Saturday and especially Sunday changed the course conditions totally and ensured that all who took part in the final day of the tournament did so with smiles on their faces.

The pair who enjoyed the warm sunshine most, though, were Shanks and Muldoon. Front-runners throughout the whole campaign, they managed to hold their nerve against the reigning champions - but it took until the first extra hole before they could finally get their hands on the trophy, the two pairs having finished all square after 18 holes.

Meanwhile, Richie More returned a career-best gross 66, including six birdies, to keep his hopes of winning Bute Golf Club’s Winter League at Kingarth just about alive.

More’s score of 49 stableford points was the highest individual tally since the league began more than 20 years ago, and leaves him in fourth place in the overall standings with just one round remaining.

Harry Lloyd finished second on the day but climbed to the top of the table, one point clear of nearest challenger Stevie Neilson, in the battle for the McArthur Cup.

At Rothesay Golf Club, new Winter League singles champion Angus Murray kept up his good run of form on Saturday, shooting a level par 69 for a net score of 63 to win the day’s extra medal competition, four clear of Ryan McKirdy and Thomas McCready.
