Cricket: Bute collapse gifts win to Ardencaple

Bute’s cricketers fell to a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Helensburgh’s second eleven in their first home fixture of the season on Saturday.

A seriously weakened Bute bowling attack saw captain Richard Harding choose to bat on the club’s new all-weather Flicx pitch after winning the toss, but batting proved tricky on a surface which had been mown earlier in the week, rather than the day before, and Bute were bowled out for just 79, their last six wickets falling for only 13 runs.

Given the state of the outfield, 79 was a defendable score, but with every ball bowled down the leg side counted as a wide, the Bute attack had to be on target.

Sadly for the home side, that proved easier to say than to achieve, and despite the best efforts of Harding and Tim Stobart, who took three and two wickets respectively, Ardencaple secured victory with four wickets in hand.
