Bute Golf Club: McBride shines in stormy conditions

A decision to brave the wind and rain for the latest round of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League paid off for John McBride at Kingarth on Saturday.

The 12-handicapper scored 38 points to close in on the leaders on a day when only two other players - Leighton Thomas and Richie More - ventured out in conditions which were sadly typical of the bad weather which has plagued this year’s tournament.

Only McBride, Leighton Thomas and Richie More ventured forth - and though his playing companions were unable to improve on their league placings, McBride’s performance takes him into a four-way share of third place at the top of the table, alongside David Coll, Graham McArthur and Jim Thom on 297 points from eight counting scores.

The quartet are now 11 points adrift of leader Robert McKirdy (308) and eight behind second-placed Leighton Thomas (305).
