Colintraive Bowling Club held its first Open Tournament of the season on Saturday, April 30, with a number of Bute bowlers making the short journey across the water to join them.
The weather stayed fine most of the day, with only a few light showers, although it did get pretty cold later on in the afternoon.
Six rinks took part with three from the host club, one from Innellan, one from Dunoon Argyll and one from Rothesay/Innellan.
The format was simple insofar as you played each team, resulting in five games for each rink with the highest scoring rink on the day taking the trophy.
Just to keep the suspense until the end, the two rinks with the highest points and shots met in the last game. These teams were Innellan players Alex and Tommy McDonagh, Dougie Black (on loan from Dunoon Argyll) and Myra Campbell (Skip) and the team from Colintraive skipped by Jim Cook, with David Gray, Jessie McNaughton and Jean Currie.
Myra’s team went into their last game holding seven points and Jim’s team holding six. This meant that Colintraive had to win the game to take the trophy but the Innellan team could win by peeling or winning.
Someone was certainly looking out for Innellan as they couldn’t do anything wrong and shocked not only themselves but their opponents (being the much more experienced bowlers on the “all-weather” surface). Someone mentioned that it might have been something to do with Myra “shouting” at her players over the course of the day but Myra reckoned “encouraging” was the better word. Jim called a halt to the game after the fifth end and with nine points out of a possible 10, the Innellan Team took the trophy for 2016.
Thanks go to Bilslands Oils, and Nan and Jim Cook for their continued sponsorship of this tournament, the ladies of Colintraive for a lovely lunch and Fergie for the dinner following the game, to everyone for the raffle prizes, tablet and helping out in any way to make the day the success it was. Thanks also to June for running the tournament singlehanded as Curly was out of action.
Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery and a return to bowling asap, as we can’t bear to look at him being so miserable.
Nan Cook presented the prizes to the winners and runners up and June declared the “Booby Winners” as Innellan/Rothesay (Susan Selkirk, Julie Gilchrist, Vanda and Andy Brown).
A great day was had by all. Haste ye back!
