Bowls: Ardbeg regain Bute’s County Cup

Ardbeg Bowling Club regained the Bute Bowling Association County Cup in some style from holders Rothesay this week.

The competition, played on a single evening at the greens of all the competing clubs and decided purely on shots, also saw the return of Craigmore Bowling Club after a few years absence, and they were able to give a good account of themselves.

Four triples from each club played at one of the other clubs green’s over 15 ends.

At Ardbeg, Haig Reynolds (Rothesay) defeated Frank Hepburn (Craigmore) by 14 shots to 12, while Davie McMurchie (Rothesay) won 15-11 over Ian Rothney (Craigmore).

Meanwhile at Craigmore, Matt Martin’s Rothesay triple defeated Danny Bowie’s Ardbeg triple 18-15, and Fred Baker (Ardbeg) won 24-8 against Donald McKellar (Rothesay).

Finally, at Rothesay, John Preston (Ardbeg) recorded a 27-4 win over Phil Kirkham (Craigmore) and Jimmy Gilmour (Ardbeg) defeated Hugh Yeamans (Craigmore) 33-15.

All of this resulted in a total of 99 shots to Ardbeg, with Rothesay on 55 and Craigmore on 42.

Ardbeg president Gordon Wokes thanked all for participating, giving a special mention to Craigmore for their return to the competition.

He was then presented with the County Cup by Craigmore president Hugh Yeamans, while prizes were awarded to the highest-up triple in the winning team - John Preston, Alan MacOnie and Andy Williamson.
