HECTOR WHITELAW hit a late equaliser to earn Bute’s first team a 2-2 home draw with Kilmallie in the Orion Group Premiership on Saturday.
The islanders got off to the worst possible start in their first home game of the season when Liam Macdonald gave the visitors the lead from a Michael Rodgers pass in only the second minute.
Bute went on to dominate the rest of the first half and created numerous chances, but were unable to seriously trouble Kilmallie keeper Kevin Toye - although the hosts finally drew level midway through the second period, captain Robert Walker latching on to Iain MacDonald’s superb through ball to round Toye and slot home.
Kilmallie regained the lead just five minutes later when Rodgers fired past Bute keeper Kevin Queen from the penalty spot, but the decision to move Whitelaw from full back to full forward for the closing stages paid off for Bute in the 85th minute when the former Scotland international latched on to John McCallum’s corner to lash a powerful drive into the far corner of the net.
