GUESTING Lochaber substitute Barry MacDonald played a key role as Bute’s first team battled to a 3-1 victory at Spean Bridge in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
After a goalless first half, Bute – who travelled north with only the bare 12 players – took the lead 15 minutes into the second period when Hector Whitelaw smashed home James Craig’s quick corner.
A prolonged spell of Lochaber pressure yielded an equaliser for the hosts after two Bute defenders went for the ball and both missed it on the edge of the D, but the visitors regained the lead in slightly fortunate circumstances when Whitelaw’s shot deflected off a Lochaber defender straight to Robert Walker, who lashed it into the corner of the net.
And MacDonald, who had come on after 20 minutes for the injured David Whitelaw, gained his reward for a fine afternoon’s work when Graham Fisher’s corner picked him out in space and he controlled the ball well before stroking it past the keeper.
