Bute Shinty Club’s first team climbed to second place in South Division One after a clinical 4-0 win at home to Lochside Rovers on Saturday.
The island club extended their unbeaten league record to eight games thanks to goals from Gordon McMillan, Duncan Davidson and a second half double by Robert Walker.
The Oban side presented a much stiffer test than Kyles Athletic’s second string had done seven days previously, although thanks to some excellent saves by visiting keeper Brian Logan, all Bute had to show for their first half efforts was McMillan’s 21st-minute strike, capping a well-worked move involving James Craig, Duncan Davidson and Neil McKirdy.
The crucial nsecond goal, however, arrived just two minutes into the second half - though Lochside’s players and coaching staff were less than pleased after referee Alan Harrison appeared to blow for a foul before Davidson’s effort crossed the line, only to award a goal after consulting the goal-judge.
There was no such debate around the third or fourth goals, however, with Walker hammering home from 20 yards for his first on 61 minutes after a Tom McMillan free-hit wasn’t properly cleared, and then adding his own second 12 minutes from the end when Logan made a hash of dealing with his long-range effort - the Lochside keeper’s only mistake in an otherwise excellent performance.
* Bute’s second team saw their home fixture with Oban Lorn on Saturday postponed after it was decided that the Meadows, still suffering from the after-effects of heavy midweek rain, would be unable to cope with hosting two matches on the same day.
* Next Saturday, August 1, Bute’s first team travel to the Winterton to face Inveraray’s reserves, while the Bute second team have a local derby against Col-Glen at the Meadows.
