Bute Shinty Club’s first team continued their winning start to life in South Division One on Saturday with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to their Aberdour counterparts.
The foundations of the win were laid in the opening minutes, with Robert Walker putting Bute 1-0 up in the sixth minute and adding a second five minutes later.
There was some doubt over the identity of the first goalscorer, with young Ben Clarke following up Walker’s effort after it appeared to strike the post, but Aberdour keeper Tom Bowerman confirmed that Walker’s shot had crossed the line and rebounded back off one of the pins holding the goal in place.
There was no such doubt about the second, Walker slotting home after dancing through the sluggish Aberdour defence to put Bute well on the way to victory.
Bute were unable to maintain the pace set by their lightning start, though the hosts continued to dominate and created numerous chances to extend their lead; only one more goal was forthcoming, and it was Clarke who earned the biggest cheer of the afternoon when he slotted home his first goal for the Bute senior team to seal the points with quarter of an hour to play.
* Bute’s second team were unable to complete a winning double for the island club on Saturday: they went down to a 5-0 defeat away to Oban Lorn, for whom Alan Duffy, David Martin, Andrew MacMillan, Sandy MacLeod and Steven Walker found the net.
