Bute’s first team served ample notice of their South Division One title credentials on Saturday with a crushing 11-0 win at home to local rivals Kyles Athletic’s second team.
On a heavy Meadows surface which was only just playable after heavy overnight rain, Stewart Stirling opened the scoring for Bute in only the fifth minute and went on, along with Duncan Davidson, to register a first half double, with Neil McKirdy’s strike leaving Bute 5-0 up and cruising at the interval.
Davidson completed his treble just two minutes into the second half, and there was to be no let-up in Bute’s goal hunt, with James Craig and Gordon McMillan both finding the net in the space of three minutes to take the hosts’ lead to eight goals with half an hour left to play.
David Whitelaw added the ninth from close range ten minutes from time before McKirdy rounded off a good all-round performance with two more goals in the last five minutes to complete his own hat-trick.
