Bute Curling Club came second to Benmore and Kilmun in the Argyll Province Championship final.
Bute Curling Club came second to Benmore and Kilmun in the Argyll Province Championship final.

A Bute rink travelled to Braehead Ice Rink on Sunday, February 9, to play in the finals of the Argyll Province Championship.

Bute was represented by Donnie MacLeod (skip), Donald Kinnear, Alex Robertson and Margaret MacLeod. other clubs competing in the finals were Dunoon Ladies, Benmore and Kilmun, and Upper Cowal.

Before the competition began the curlers gathered together to quietly remember Jimmy Brown of Strone, who passed away recently. Jimmy, who was born in Rothesay 87 years ago, was secretary and a stalwart of Argyll Province for very many years and will be greatly missed.

The first round of games saw Bute drawn against Upper Cowal while Dunoon Ladies met Benmore and Kilmun.

Bute made a good start in their match taking the first two ends to lead going into the third end. Upper Cowal skipped by Richard Addis took one shot at the third end, but 3 shots at the fourth end put Bute in a strong position once again. Upper Cowal were fighting back and added 2 shots at the next end but with both sides adding single shots in the final two ends victory went to Bute by 7 shots to 4.

Meanwhile in the neighbouring rink the game between Benmore and Kilmun and Dunoon Ladies was won by David Marshall’s side.

After a short break Bute and Benmore went head-to-head in a decided for first and second places while Upper Cowal and Dunoon Ladies played for third and fourth places.

Bute’s opposition, skipped by David Marshall, proved to be in top form getting 3 shots at the first end and building up their score with single shots plus a two at the final end. Bute managed to take only one end giving Benmore and Kilmun victory by 9 shots to 1.

However, the Bute curlers were not too downhearted at taking the runners-up spot. Well done!
