Bute County Cricket Club started their season on Saturday against Glasgow University Staff first team in the Western cup.
This is the first time that Bute have entered this competition and unfortunately the two wicket keepers and three of the top six batsmen were unavailable for this match, including skipper Mark Crichton.
Therefore on a rather cold and windy day, stand-in skipper Guy Crichton elected to field with only eight players including debutant Jack Deans, veteran Ian Downie and Gary Dickson with wicket keeping pads and gloves for the first time ever!
G. Crichton opened the bowling with F. Lintermans and despite a run out for the number two batsmen, the runs for Glasgow flowed from the start and they were on 45 for 1 from 7 overs. Then just after a huge six was hit straight back over F. Lintermans head, crashing off the stone wall, F. Lintermans fought back with a very brave (and very
slow) slower ball from S. Kharwar and bowled him for a quick fire 23. Bute then continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals with Alan Peacock bowling his tricky mixture of off-spin and leg-spin.
