Bute’s first team kept their South Division One title bid on course on Saturday with an efficient, if unspectacular, win over Kyles Athletic’s second string in Tighnabruaich.
Robert Walker led the way for the island team with a hat-trick, though it was James Craig who opened the scoring on 16 minutes from Adam Stirling’s corner, his shot taking a slight deflection which deceived Tommy Whyte in the Kyles’ goal.
Walker doubled the visitors’ advantage when he swept home a Duncan Davidson cross five minutes before the break, but Kyles refused to buckle and caused the Bute defence more than a few problems in the second half, with Paddy Mulholland always a danger.
But Walker finally made the points safe 15 minutes from time when he capped Bute’s best passing move of the game with a simple finish, and then proceeded to add the icing to the cake with the day’s final goal less than a minute after the restart.
Bute remain two points adrift of leaders Lochside Rovers, with one game in hand, after the Oban side beat Strachur 2-0 on Saturday.
The promotion battle reaches a climax over the next three weeks: Bute host Strachur on October 24, with Lochside taking on Glenorchy in their final fixture the following week, before Bute have the final say when they take on Oban Celtic away from home on November 7.
