Bute Shinty Club’s first team were knocked out of the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Celtic Society Cup at the Meadows on saturday - but not without giving Premier League Oban Camanachd an almighty scare.
Andrew MacCuish gave the top flight visitors the lead in only the third minute, but Bute refused to be overawed by the two-division gap between the teams, and Gordon McMillan’s equaliser midway through the second half sent the home crowd wild with delight.
Oban keeper Robert Dunnings pulled off an excellent save to deny Bute veteran James Craig in the 89th minute to send the tie into extra time, but playing an additional 30 minutes for the third week running, following penalty shoot-out cup victories against Glenorchy away and Skye at home, proved a step too far for the brave home side, and MacCuish’s second was quickly followed by an Aidan MacIntyre strike as the visitors made sure of their place in the semi-finals.
Lorne Dickie added a fourth to put a slightly flattering gloss on the scoreline, before John MacCallum’s late consolation at least allowed Bute to have the final word.
