David MacLean’s second half double condemned Bute’s first team to defeat at home to Beauly on Saturday in the Marine Harvest National Division.
Bute battled gamely throughout the match, but had goalkeeper and captain Kevin Queen to thank for a series of superb saves in both the first and second halves, without which the hosts’ margin of defeat would have been considerably greater.
Bute’s spirits were raised when they reached the interval still on level terms, but five minutes after the break MacLean was left in space at the back post from a corner and sent an angled drive through a crowd of bodies and in to the far corner of the net.
MacLean, Shaun Stewart and Colin MacDonald were all denied by Queen as the visitors went in search of a second, but Beauly had to wait until four minutes from timne to tie up the points, when MacLean rifled home a shot from the edge of the D after a well-worked move through a tiring Bute defence.
* Bute’s second team saw their hopes of a Bullough Cup semi-final place dashed on Saturday after a 3-0 defeat against Scots Camanachd in Musselburgh.
Colin Irving’s hat-trick earned the Army side a last four tie against Inveraray.
