Bute's curlers have had a good start to 2014.

The new year got off to a good start with a Bute side heading to Braehead on January 6 to play in the first round of the Province Championship, and to Greenock on January 8 for the Clydesdale Bank Trophy.

At Braehead, Bute, represented by Ron Forrester (skip), Donald Kinnear, Bill Stein and Peter Martin were drawn against a strong Dunoon Argyll side skipped by Archie Morton.

Bute made the better start to the game, taking the first two ends to go into the lead by three shots. The Dunoon rink took the third end by a single shot but Bute took the next two ends to lead 5-1. Dunoon replied with two shots up in the sixth end, leaving Bute still in the lead by five shots to three.

With all to play for in the seventh and final end, Dunoon upped their game and with only one shot left to be played looked set for victory with three stones counting in the house.

However, Ron kept his cool and played a wonderful final shot to move the opposition’s best stone and lie shot giving Bute victory by six shots to three, and also ensuring a healthy position going into the next round. This will be played on January 26, when Bute will meet Upper Cowal.
