Bute’s curlers missed out on the top prize despite a creditable showing in the first Argyll Province competition of the season this week.

Nine teams did battle at the Waterfront in Greenock, with Bute’s rink of Ron Forrester (skip), Beck Reid, Colin Sharp and Peter Martin playing four games of three ends.

Bute lost 4-1 to Tighnabruaich in their first game, but bounced back with a 3-0 defeat of Dunoon and a 2-1 victory against Benmore and Kilmun, before the intervention of the bull ended their last game against Glen Orchy with the sides level at 1-1.

The following day saw Donald Kinnear lead Ron Forrester, Douglas Macdonald and John Middleton in a Greenock Day League match against Ardgowan; though Bute scored two shots at the first end their opponents came back strongly and defeated the islanders 11-5.
