Members of Bute County Cricket Club put their ‘top scorer’ Marion Lawrence in the spotlight this week on her 80th birthday.
Marion, who has been keeping score for the club since 1998, was described by club president Ian Downie as a “blessing” as he thanked her for all her hard work and dedication.
Marion became interested in cricket as a ten year old while watching her father and brother play for a small team near Chester-le-Street, County Durham.
“I’ve always been curious by nature and whenever they played at home I used to watch from the score-box,” she recalled.
“One day when they were short of a scorer I just asked if I could have a try and it started from there.”
