Cricket: Bute beaten by Shawholm in Western Cup

Bute County fell to a nine-wicket defeat away to Shawholm in Group D of the Western Cup at Poloc Cricket Club on Saturday.

The hosts won the toss in cold, grey and windy conditions, and put the visitors into bat - and though openers Alan Peacock and Tim Stobart got the islanders off to a promising start, Stobart was caught by the hosts’ wicket keeper for 14 in the eighth over with the score on 32.

Peacock reached a hard-earned 25 before completely missing an inside edge, while Gary Dickinson, out LBW for 11, was the only other Bute player to reach double figures as the visitors were bowled out for 92 after only 30 of their allotted 40 overs.

Guy Crichton started the bowling attack for Bute, but took some time to find the right line, conceding 15 runs by the end of his four-over spell; Frankie Lintermans fared better from the other end, going for 19 from his six overs, while Richard Harding had Shawholm’s opener A. Kayaini caught at slip by Peacock for 11 with his first ball.

Peacock and Phil Ware were the other Bute bowlers used, but they were unable to stop the home side completing victory after only 20 overs, with R. Armour not out for 34 and S. Jayartne not out for 29 for the hosts.
