BUTE Shinty Club’s first team were handed an away first round tie against Inveraray when the draw for the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup was made this week.
That means the islanders will face two early season cup games at Winterton Park, after the two teams were paired together in the Macaulay Cup first round draw just before Christmas.
The Balliemore Cup draw was rather kinder to the Bute first team, who were featuring in the draw for the first time since winning the competition in 2006.
Bute were given a bye in the first round, and will be at home to either Glasgow Mid Argyll or Ballachulish in the quarter-final.
In the Bullough Cup draw, Bute’s second team were drawn at home to Strachur in the first round; the winners will be away to Lochside Rovers or Kilmory in the last eight.
The draws for the two other cup tournaments with Bute interest - the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup and the first round of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup - will take place at a later date.
The Camanachd Association was due to publish the league fixture lists for 2011 shortly after this issue went to press – see next week’s issue for full details.
In other news, Bute’s first team have organised two pre-season friendly fixtures to boost their players’ match sharpness before competitive shinty restarts in March.
The islanders will play Inveraray on February 12 (venue to be confirmed) and Kilmallie on February 26, with the latter match, weather permitting, due to be played in Rothesay.
In the meantime players are reminded of the importance of attending training sessions every Monday and Thursday; there will also be a training game at the Meadows this Saturday, January 29..
