Donald McKellar from Rothesay Bowling Club has narrowly missed out on a place in the senior singles final at the Bowls Scotland national championships.
McKellar lost 21-18 in Thursday’s semi-final to Peter Jones from Houldsworth Bowling Club, who went on to beat Grangemouth Railway’s Peter Godfrey - formerly a professional footballer with Falkirk, St Mirren and Stenhousemuir - 21-14 in the final later that day.
McKellar’s route to the last four began with a 21-7 win over Seafield’s Bob Findlay in the first round on Tuesday afternoon, and continued when he defeated Sandy Plenderleith of Gifford 21-14 in round two the following morning.
The Rothesay player booked his slot in the last four thanks to a 21-12 victory against Derry Milne (Carnoustie West End) on Wednesday afternoon.
McKellar and his Rothesay clubmate Violet Westland reached the second round of the mixed pairs competition, beating Tarbert on Tuesday morning but losing 18-11 to Cupar the following afternoon.
The other Rothesay representatives in this year’s championships, being held at Northfield Bowling Club in Ayr, were David Reynolds and Billy Wilson in the gents’ pairs, but they fell at the competition’s first hurdle, losing 16-13 to West End from Stranraer.
The Rothesay quartet sealed their places in the national finals after a strong showing in the district 26 area finals at Lady Alice Bowling Club in Greenock on June 21.
