Donald McKellar of Rothesay Bowling Club saw his bid for glory at the Bowls Scotland national finals grind to a halt at Northfield Bowling Club in Ayr on Wednesday afternoon.

Donald, who qualified for the senior singles finals after beating Jim Twaddle of Gourock Park in last month’s district finals, began his Northfield campaign with a 21-14 win over Robert Waddell of J.G. Fleming BC in Houston on Tuesday afternoon.

But on Wednesday Donald’s hopes of glory were dashed in the second round stage, in which he was beaten by the narrowest of margins, going down 21-20 to Bankfoot’s Sandy Lawrence.

Donald’s conqueror has since gone on to reach the semi-finals of the competition, where he plays John Arnott of Stranraer on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the other Bute player in this week’s Bowls Scotland finals at Northfield, Liz McHugh of Ardbeg Bowling Club, is preparing for her first round tie against Annie Rutherford of Buccleuch BC on Friday morning.

The winner will play either Burnbank BC’s Margaret Letham or Jean Hartley of Largs in round two.
