Golf: Rothesay retain Ballantine’s Cup after Bute draw

Rothesay Golf Club retained the Ballantine’s Challenge Cup on Saturday after their annual social team match with Bute ended in deadlock at Kingarth.

Frank Lee played a captain’s part for the visitors as he and partner Bob McKechnie secured the victory which levelled the score at three games apiece and, as holders, Rothesay kept a firm grip of the trophy.

Match details (Bute names first): Robert McKirdy and Steve Neilson beat Stuart McKechnie and Peter Crawford 3 and 2; Leighton Thomas and Frazer Robinson lost 2 and 1 to Kenny Thomson and Gordon Shaw; Richie More and Andy Docherty beat Iain McMurchie and Ryan McKirdy 4 and 2; David Bryden and Bobby Melville lost 4 and 2 to Jimmy Ewing and Sean Kernaghan; Sandy Renfrew and Sandy Long beat Hugh Charker and Ron Cuthbertson 4 and 2; Ian McDougall and Peter Martin lost 3 and 1 to Frank Lee and Bob McKechnie.

Afterwards, the teams took refuge from the weather in Kingarth Hotel, where they enjoyed an excellent meal and the social element of a memorable day.

* The first qualifying round of the club championship and Cuthbertson Cup competitions will take place tomorrow (Saturday) at Kingarth with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.

* The course will be closed on Sunday from 11.30am till 3.30pm to accommodate the ladies’ annual Buddy Day event which will have a shotgun start.

* The Isle of Bute Seniors League match with Rothesay which was due to be played at Kingarth on Tuesday was postponed and will now take place on June 11. Meanwhile, the seniors will resume action next Tuesday when they travel to play Port Bannatyne.

Members will also be in competitive mode on Wednesday in the monthly nine-hole medal. Play will continue throughout the day when those taking part should make their own playing arrangements.
