Robert McKirdy took the fast route to victory on Sunday with an outstanding display of precision play in the final of Bute Golf Club’s championship at Kingarth.
There was no stopping the roads department employee as he sped to an emphatic 5 and 4 win over Donald Standaloft, who found himself on the receiving end of a barrage of birdies.
McKirdy, club champion in 1999, 2003 and 2010, hit five threes in the space of six holes to open up a seven-hole lead by the tenth, and though Standaloft, himself a three-times past champion, briefly rallied, an exchange of pars on the 14th green confirmed McKirdy’s fourth title.
The club’s handicap championship title was won by Leighton Thomas (10), who defeated Steve Neilson (19) on the final green.
