John Kernaghan was in the spotlight at Bute Golf Club on Saturday as the challenge for the McArthur Cup got under way in the first round of the club’s Winter League, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions Ltd.
Kernaghan, a former winner of the competition, produced his best round of the year by scoring 45 stableford points to lead the field by a comfortable margin.
The 13-handicapper got off to a flying start by gaining 15 points in the first five holes, which included gross birdies at the first and fifth. He went on add a final sub-par score at the 18th for a back-nine tally of 23 points.
Malcolm Calder (12) finished second on 41 points, with Graham McArthur third on 38 after returning the best scratch score of the day, a round of 72 which included the only two of the day, at the third hole.
