Robert McKirdy splashed his way to another outstanding victory on Saturday when he maintained championship-winning form to take first place in Bute Golf Club’s June Medal.
The five-handicapper battled his way over the rain-lashed Kingarth course in 70 shots, on a day of soggy scorecards and no returns from 80 per cent of the field.
McKirdy was one of only two players who completed the round out of an entry of 10 who braved the appalling weather conditions.
After scoring 38 over the opening nine holes, the club champion began the back nine with birdies at the 10th and 11th on his way to a remarkable two-under-par tally of 32 for a net 65, which was eight shots clear of the only other competitor who returned a score - Duncan Speirs (7) on 73.
