Football: Jane on target as City qualify from Champions League group

Former Rothesay Academy pupil Jane Ross found the net as Glasgow City LFC booked their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday.

Jane’s fourth-minute goal gave City the lead against Finnish champions PK-35 Vantaa in Helsinki - and though the Scots were pegged back by a goal from Vantaa’s Nigerian striker Cynthia Uwak, the 1-1 draw was still enough to secure the Scottish champions’ place in the first knockout phase of the competition.

Jane, who was named as a stand-by player for the Team GB women’s football team at the London Olympics, returns to Bute this weekend as one of several special guests with an Olympian theme at this Saturday’s Bute Highland Games.

Jane will be joined by the island’s two Olympic torch-bearers, Jenna Speirs and Victoria O’Reilly, and by Games chieftain Rhona Simpson, Scotland’s most-capped hockey player who competed in two Olympic Games, three Commonwealth Games and two World Cups during her playing career and is currently both a highly-respected hockey coach and an ambassador for Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games.
