Second half goals by Neil Whitelaw and Gary McGregor provided only the barest crumb of comfort on Saturday as Rothesay Brandane crashed to a 6-2 defeat away to Viewfield Rovers in the Caledonian League.
The islanders, who travelled to Lochwinnoch without four first team regulars, suffered an early blow when Wes Pattison pulled up with an injury after just eight minutes, and things got worse when poor marking allowed a Viewfield attacker to open the scoring ten minutes later from the edge of the box.
Four more goals followed before half time, and though the Rothesay men started the second half in encouraging fashion when substitute David Whitelaw saw a header come back off the post, McGregor’s sliced own goal on 49 minutes gave Viewfield a 6-0 lead.
For the rest of the game, though, the Brandanes were a much more competitive outfit, and player-coach Neil Whitelaw got the islanders on the scoreboard from a fine Chris Lawrence pass before McGregor atoned for his own goal by heading home Stuart McKechnie’s free kick.
