With the better weather and longer days the local cycling club Bute Wheelers gear up for some fun and games on the bike.
From April to September there are various cycling activities going on around the island, and the club are keen to attract newcomers; everyone is welcome. The Sunday morning cycle ride is a standard fixture, which can be a lap of the island or further afield off up around Cowal; the meeting point for this is usually The Bike Shed at 9.30. There is also a women’s group which meets on Tuesday evenings, 7pm at Guilford Square. These two groups are not racing but cycling for enjoyment and fitness, generally at a pace that suits all. The club has a number of `holiday-homer’ and non-resident members, and this is something we encourage.
As far as racing goes, it is nothing too serious: a midweek 10 mile time trial and Serpentine hillclimb. In recent years we have quite a few juniors involved in these races, with the Serpentine particularly popular. The club intends to hold an open-to-all hillclimb event some time in April, which promises to be great fun. BMX or road-bike, we’d love to see some more juniors or seniors give it a go.
The club is not organising a Triathlon this year, due to lack of swimming pool, but the September Festival of Cycling is going to bigger and better this year. Our website www.butewheelers.org.uk is probably the best way to get in touch. The password is `happycycling’!
