The first round of the Sir Harry Hope Cup was played on Saturday, April 19, at Bute Golf Club in the best weather seen for months.
With the sun shining, the course is rapidly drying out and signs of growth are already obvious.
The overall winner on the day, and leading the first class section, was Robert McKirdy with a fine 65 (70 – 5). Robert had three birdies, at the 5th, 8th and 16th, offset by bogeys at the 4th, 12th, 13th and 17th.
Robert’s 70 was the best scratch score of the day.
Second overall, with a better inward half of 35, was Graham McArthur with 66 (71 – 5). He had birdies at the 9th and 11th, but suffered from five bogeys. John Foley (79 -13) was in third place overall because of a poorer inward half.
Third place in the first class section was taken by Leighton Thomas with a net 70 (81 -11). Leighton’s card was noticeable for eight 4s in the second 9, and twelve overall on the day.
John Foley led the second class section, followed through countbacks by Steve Neilson (87 -18) and Robert McBride (82 – 13) of those on net 69. Alex Frances (87 – 18) and John Kernaghan (82 -13) also scored net 69s.
The standard scratch for the day was 66. The only 2 was scored by Club Captain Steve Neilson at the 12th hole.
Members are reminded that the next round of the Sir Harry Hope Cup is this Saturday, April 26,

Members of the committee of management are reminded that the monthly meeting is today, (Friday, April 25), at 7.30pm in Kingarth Hotel.
